Reshaping the narrative about sexual violence and its impact on Black survivors

AThe dominant narratives around sexual violence often neglect or distort the experiences of Black survivors. This systemic bias contributes to a culture where their stories are not believed or adequately supported, perpetuating a cycle of silence and harm.

We, As Ourselves emerged as a transformative campaign launched by the TIME’S UP Foundation, me too. International, and the National Women’s Law Center to dismantle these harmful narratives and replace them with authentic stories that reflect the fullness of Black survivors’ experiences.

We, As Ourselves joined forces with the Center for Cultural Power to engage Black women and femme survivors and artists in upending the cultural myths that harm and silence Black survivors. Through a series of narrative strategy workshops, we developed a narrative framework that informed the commissioning of original artworks across diverse mediums. Rooted in these insights, the artworks were shared widely online to broaden reach, deepen impact, and help shift culture in support of Black survivors.
